There are three sides to every story: Yours. Mine. And the truth… Max and Alissa have a fairy tale life—newlywed, madly in love and enviously rich. Then Max is brutally stabbed to death at their home and Alissa, miraculously, escapes with her life. But why was she spared? The hunt for the killer begins, uncovering a number of leads—was Max’s incredible wealth the motive? Had his shady business practices finally caught up with him? Or was it a stalker with a dangerous obsession?Devoted friends rally around gentle, sweet Alissa as she is left to mourn the loss of her husband and pick up her life. But not everyone is who they seem…Deep-rooted jealousies, secrets and twisted love lie just beneath the surface, and not all fairy tales have a happy ending.

I was in the mood for something like this. A compelling and fast-paced psychological thriller, one of those that don’t require much thinking but, nevertheless, you have a great time reading them. And Duplicity certainly delivered. It was one of the most entertaining books I’ve read in a while. I’m perfectly aware that I might not have liked this that much if I had been looking for something more complex and serious, but sometimes, you’re just in search of something fun.
What is this about? A man is found dead while his wife escaped… The ex-boyfriend is, of course, suspect number one. At the same time, we keep reading about a young kid who’s about to become a true psychopath… It’s time to play detective! Who are these people? What are their motivations? You won’t believe what is really happening…
I adored the book’s structure and the different points of view. Alternate chapters between The Detective & The Other one. Could it be more mysterious? The Obsession, The Revenge, The Love… And welcome to yet another book that features creepy memories from a creepy kid’s childhood! That section was exceptionally well-written, mostly because of an important detail you only get to appreciate much later.
At some point, I thought there wouldn’t be any more surprises and I was a tad disappointed, although I had a feeling I could be wrong. And yes, Duplicity pulled another one that I was definitely not expecting. I must say, there was no need for some of the twists, but who cares about that when you’re reading such a fun book?
What I liked the most
I read Duplicity in just one sitting. It was crazy & twisty, so fans of psychological thrillers will probably have a blast reading this novel.
What I didn’t like that much
The twists were a bit over-the-top. It definitely requires some suspension of disbelief, so I thought you should know in case you’re not up for that. I’m not always looking for realism when it comes to crime and psychological thrillers, but some people might be bothered because of that.
Addictive and seductive, Duplicity grabs you from the very first page… and never lets you go.

Fab review of an apparently fun read 😀 I cling to realism when it comes to psychological thrillers so I might keep this one for a sick day when I need my favorite genre but with a lighter touch!

Whew! I definitely like books either rooted in realism or clearly breaking the rules smartly, which means not expecting the reader to just “go with it.”

I am glad to see that Sibel Hodge is still going strong. It has been years since I have read one of her books, but I did enjoy the couple of her earlier titles that I had for review. I will have to try something more current, and this sounds like a good pick.
