Behind Closed Doors (B.A Paris)

29437949Everyone knows a couple like Jack and Grace: he has looks and wealth, she has charm and elegance. You’d like to get to know Grace better. But it’s difficult, because you realize Jack and Grace are never apart. Some might call this true love. Picture this: a dinner party at their perfect home, the conversation and wine flowing. They appear to be in their element while entertaining. And Grace’s friends are eager to reciprocate with lunch the following week. Grace wants to go, but knows she never will. Her friends call—so why doesn’t Grace ever answer the phone? And how can she cook such elaborate meals but remain so slim? And why are there bars on one of the bedroom windows? The perfect marriage? Or the perfect lie?

I just knew this book would be perfect for me: just look at the cover and the blurb! I had heard great things about it, so I couldn’t wait to dive into this domestic thriller. After all, this is always the genre I feel more comfortable reading and after finishing it, I must say that Behind Closed Doors is simply unforgettable.

The first few chapters were intriguing, but the good stuff came later, when the truth was revealed. Even if you think that you know what’s going on from the very beginning (or just by reading the blurb), this novel will still surprise you. To be honest, “it” was worse that I expected. I read a book about a similar topic a few months ago (and it was brilliant) but the scary stuff was definitely heavier here.

I’ve hated characters with a passion before but nothing ever compared to what I felt for Jack Angel while reading Behind Closed Doors. At one point, I was so desperately angry that I had to stop reading because I needed to calm myself down. I was so nervous. I just wanted to scream and tell everyone about him (my boyfriend could now tell you the whole story without having read the book 😳).

There were certain parts of the story that made me gasp with horror. How could someone be so cruel? If you are like me and you usually get super immersed in the books you read, this won’t be an easy one for you. I suffered a lot. And don’t worry about pace: the book is filled with action and you won’t be able to stop reading. B.A Paris is an excellent thriller writer and knows exactly how to keep you completely hooked.

Refreshingly enough, there are no dual POVs here, just Grace’s narration. But the story is told via past & present chapters, something which made the last section even more exciting. Without giving much away, I will say that while I saw the ending coming (the how), I never expected the last few pages to be so perfect. The dialogue made me shiver and I almost shed a tear. That is exactly how you write a powerful ending

I’m perfectly aware that some of the situations were a bit far-fetched and unrealistic and that the characters are too black-and-white. But with Behind Closed Doors I didn’t care about that, it was that good. Anyway, I read this book in almost one sitting and it made me feel so many emotions that it certainly deserves my highest rating.

A perfect read for fans of domestic thrillers. You won’t regret it.

In a past life, I was probably a tortured police detective with a dark and traumatic past. Right now, however, I'm just a twenty-something bookworm who loves listening to old songs and watching 90s movies. I enjoy mystery and crime, southern coming of age stories and historical fiction set in the last century.

  1. I bought this book right after reading the blurb on Goodreads a few months back. This blurb screams AWESOME. I’m so glad you loved it, we have similar tastes so I’m pretty sure to love it too 😀 Only great stories can make you feel so much about characters, and from what you said about Jack Angel, you had your share of feels!

  2. This sounds bloody brilliant! And I LOLed at your bf being able to tell the story without having to read a word XD. Once I get enthusiastic, my hubby will move his ass to the toilet because that’s the only place where he’s safe from my fangirl babbles… Great review Annie! 😀

P.s.- Is it just me reading on my PC now instead of my phone or did you do a massive pimp of your layout? O_o Either way, it looks great!

    1. Hahaha I’m like you, with some books, I’m always: AND NOW HE’S KILLED HIM! CAN YOU BELIEVE HE HAS DONE THIS? AND HOW COULD SHE DO THAT? And he’s like: OK, Annie, whatever you say XD

  3. I read this book when it was first released in February and it still remains on my mind. I remember a certain scene at a hotel when Grace was asking for help from the ‘neighbours’…..that has haunted to me date. Its really dark and I agree with your review completely. Great review.
